While all of these drinks seem conceivable, Madeira was what the Founding Fathers were drinking during the signing of the Declaration of Independence. In the late 1700s, Madeira was the most popular wine in the Americas, and was drunk at virtually every important event in the colonies. Madeira parties for the colonial well-to-do were the forerunners of the American cocktail party. Madeira is a fortified, maderized wine made on the island of Madeira which belongs to Portugal. Like Port, Madeira is capable of very long aging. Vintages that are 100 years old are still available in the market.
