In the 1880s, Atlanta, GA, chemist John Stith Pemberton created a popular and stimulating wine tonic infused with kola nuts and coca leaves. But when the city of Atlanta (his biggest market) voted to ban alcohol, Pemberton removed the wine, and kept the caffeine and cocaine, according to reporting in The New York Times. By 1929, these two ingredients were also removed. As Prohibition swept the country, Coca-Cola began being marketed as the ultimate “temperance drink.”
