The first grapes in the Americas (north and south) were Spanish in origin and brought to South America and Mexico in the 16th century. In particular, the Spanish red grape Listán Prieto was carried by missionaries and conquistadores from one southern and middle American country to the next. It was eventually planted in California, Texas, and New Mexico where it was known as Mission, after the Catholic missions where it was first cultivated.
