Sicily makes some of Italy’s most dramatic, wild red and white wines, especially those from vineyards with volcanic soils poised on the hillsides of Mount Etna, the largest still-active volcano in Europe. The major indigenous red grapes on Mount Etna are Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio and the local white is Carricante. All three grapes are high in acidity and make for wines that are vibrant partners to Sicily’s amazing cuisine, influenced by virtually every historic Mediterranean power, from the Spaniards to the Arabs to the Normans. The center of the island is still very agricultural and famous for its grains and crops.
