The word julep is derived from the Persian word gulab which means “rosewater.” The original Mint Julep was a medicinal rosewater-based drink mixed with herbs, spices, and sugar. It was first mentioned in European medicinal texts in the 1700’s and eventually made its way to the US. Juleps soon became regional cocktails and were made with local spirits. In 1939, the Mint Julep was named the official cocktail of the Kentucky Derby, which takes place tomorrow, May 3rd.
