Areni is one of the leading ancient red grape varieties which flourished in the Transcaucasian region (today’s Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia). It’s also interesting to note that in Armenia, the ancient cave named Areni-1, dating to 6,100 years ago, may be the site of the world’s first winery.  Religious scholars believe that the cave is near where, according to biblical legend, Noah’s ark ran aground, and where Noah is said to have planted the first vineyard. Areni, by the way, is also the name of a famous think tank devoted to the wine industry.
