In the U.S., commercially available cannabis wine, also known as cannawine, is a dealcoholized wine that has been blended with either THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana, or CBD, a non-psychoactive compound. Because cannabis use, possession, and distribution is illegal federally, and the federal government licenses wineries, a wine made by adding cannabis to grapes as they ferment could not legally be produced commercially. Even states like California that have legalized cannabis do not allow cannabis products (either THC or CBD) to be added to alcoholic beverages and sold commercially. Any cannabis wine that contains either THC or CBD therefore must have the alcohol removed.
