The tall, narrow “flute-shaped” bottles of Alsace and Germany were historically shipped using the main trade route in barges along the Rhine River. Since the route was much less strenuous on the glass than other modes of transportation, the bottles did not need to be as thick and strong as in other regions such as Bordeaux. Having taller, skinner bottles also allowed more wine to be packed onto the barge. This bottle shape is not only considered traditional, but is now enshrined into law. For example, Alsace AOC wines MUST be bottled in flutes.
