Most of Argentina’s vineyards are planted on the high-altitude slopes of the Andes Mountains, whose peaks reach 22,000 feet above sea level and, globally, are exceeded in elevation only by the Himalayas. Argentine vineyards are often planted at altitudes of 4,000 to 5,000 feet above sea level, and some reach 10,000 feet asl. At this altitude, the vines are bathed in intense luminosity which affects the rate of grape ripeness among other factors.
