Pessac-Léognan is a small area within the area known as Graves, the oldest winemaking district within Bordeaux. (Graves is named for its gravelly soil.) Pessac-Léognan is known for both white varieties (Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc) as well as red (Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon). Among the top Pessac-Léognan chateaux are Domaine de Chevalier and Château Haut Brion, which are both famous for their red and white wines.
