Screw cap manufacturers STELVIN and Guala Closures suggest the number may be as high as 40%. Countries with the highest percentage of wines with aluminum closures include Germany, Austria, Australia, New Zealand, the U.K., and the U.S. This year marks the 60^th anniversary of the first aluminum screw cap, introduced in 1964 in Chalon-sur-Saône, France. In 2001, the New Zealand Screw Cap Wine Seal Initiative encouraged the use of screw caps for wine instead of corks. Today, 95% of wine bottled in New Zealand has a screw cap, while an estimated 30% of wine bottled in the U.S. has a screw cap.
