In Armenia, the cave named Areni-1, dating to about 6,000 years ago, is the site of what may be the world’s first winery. It includes a fruit-treading platform, and receptacles carved into the floor of the cave to catch the juice that ran from the pressed fruit. Archaeologists found grape seeds from a Vitis vinifera variety scattered all over the treading platform. According to Biblical legend, it was near here that Noah’s ark ran aground, and where Noah is said to have planted the world’s first vineyard.
