Voltis is a new hybrid variety allowed in the vineyards of Champagne, traditionally known for plantings of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Meunier. (A producer may plant Voltis in up to 5% of his/her vineyard area). It’s a radical step for a traditional French region where permissible planted varieties are narrowly prescribed and don’t include hybrids. But Voltis offers hope for the future health of vines. The hybrid was bred to be resistant to downy mildew and powdery mildew, two scourges that have ravaged many northern French wine regions prone to rain. Voltis is considered a safer option than spraying chemicals to combat mildew. How will Champagnes made from blends that contain Voltis taste? No one is quite sure yet. Blind trials are being conducted.
