Proponents of New York’s “Cab Franc Forward” movement have lobbied the New York State legislature to name Cabernet Franc the official red grape of the state, according to The Drinks Business. Although passage in 2026 looks promising, getting approval for an official grape isn’t easy. New York is a heavily agricultural state, and the local government doesn’t want to be seen as favoring one crop over another. (Onions have recently pleaded to be named the official vegetable.) New York’s Cabernet Franc producers say that the state makes the most distinctive Cab Franc in the country, and that the recognition would be good for the wine industry as well as the state.
