The Monarch Wine Company in Brooklyn, New York, began producing Manischewitz Kosher Wine shortly after Prohibition. The syrupy sweet red wine was originally made from Vitis labrusca (Concord grapes) grown in upstate New York. Early on, Manischewitz advertised using the slogan, “Wine like mother used to make.” During Prohibition, Monarch had sold wine directly to synagogues for sacramental purposes. The advertising slogan was therefore directed at families who were used to getting their wine from their rabbi or making it themselves and who might have been reluctant to purchase commercial Kosher wine.
