Although quite a bit of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are grown in Livermore Valley, growers there are beginning to rip out those varieties in favor of Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc. Both Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc are currently gaining in popularity nationwide, and both varieties have a long history in Livermore dating back to the 1880s. The region, according to a 2022 report by the University of California at Davis, is also well-suited to both. In particular, some of the best Sauvignon Blanc in all of California is descended from Sauvignon Blanc cuttings brought by journalist-turned-vintner Charles Wetmore to Livermore Valley in 1882 from no less than Bordeaux’s Château d’Yquem. As a side note, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc are the genetic “parents” of Cabernet Sauvignon.
