The Story Behind Come Over October

I am a professional speaker and writer. I spend my time in front of corporate audiences and giving keynotes or typing away on my computer.
But in 2024, I envisioned what, to my surprise, would become the largest pro-wine grassroots consumer campaign ever launched in the United States. It’s called Come Over October and it’s now in its third year. To date, the campaign has reached 3.9 billion media impressions and nearly 6 million people on social media.
As I reflect on the campaign’s successes, I realize that the message behind Come Over October holds special relevance for corporate events.
A Powerful Idea
Come Over October is designed around a simple but powerful idea—that we, as human beings, are ineluctably drawn in by rituals that bring us together.
Wine does that. Wine is designed to do that.
I witness this countless times every year when I conduct corporate events. The companies I work with are not wine companies; they are law firms, banks, media companies, private equity firms, and many others.
Yet, wine brings corporate audiences together in a way nothing else does. Because wine is about active participation, connection, and engagement. In an effortless way, wine fulfills our need for social connection. And that social connection can be a fantastic element of any great corporate event.
The Design of Wine
What is wine designed to do? That is, I think, a legitimate question. Of course, it’s designed to give pleasure. And if it’s a great wine, it’s designed to be a mind-trip. But I think there’s something more. Here’s my video about that.
The Genesis of Come Over October
The idea for the campaign came to me one morning when I realized the social impact that wine has had historically. For 8,000 years, wine has been a communal beverage—a beverage that brings people together, creates new relationships and deepens old ones.
In a busy corporate world that can feel digitized to distraction, wine remains utterly primary: the silent music of Nature.
For millennia, vines holding fast to the earth have thrust themselves upward toward the sun and given us juicy berries, and ultimately wine. In every sip of wine taken in the present, we share our communal past and our bond with Nature is welded deep. Wine matters because of this ineluctable connection.
A State of Mind
Come Over October is a pro-bono project for me, and it has become much more than an October event. The spirit of the campaign happens all year long. It is, by design, a way of being connected, and a state of mind—a belief that in sharing something from the earth, we will be bonded together, for the good of us all.
