The first Super Tuscans, which were made in Tuscany, Italy, in the 1970s and 1980s, were usually blends of Tuscany’s traditional grape, Sangiovese, along with Cabernet Sauvignon and sometimes Merlot. As time went on, however, many Super Tuscans began to be made from a single variety—sometimes Sangiovese, but sometimes Cabernet Sauvignon. That’s the case today. What all of the Super Tuscans share, however, is their “international style.” They are bold, concentrated, deeply colored, ample-bodied reds often with considerable tannin, and often with discernible oak flavors.
